We sadly mark here the passing of Aaron Wyner, who for so many years played such a central role in the IT Society. He will be sorely missed.

In this issue, we look back on ISIT 1997 with a paper based on Larry Rabiner's plenary talk and ahead to ISIT 1998 with an interview of Neil Sloane, the 1998 Shannon Award recipient. As the new year quickly approaches, a new Society president and Board of Governors, both announced in this issue, ready themselves to take the helm. Since 1998 will mark the 50th anniversary of Shannon's seminal paper, and thus the 50th anniversary of our field, a wide variety of preparations are currently under way for the upcoming year of celebrating our community's accomplishments and looking forward to its future successes. A number of opportunities for becoming involved in that process are described in this issue. These opportunities include calls for nominations for the ongoing IEEE Technical Field Award and Fellows programs as well as one-time opportunities like the Jubilee Awards and Logo Contest. We look forward to the active participation in all of these programs.

Please help me to make the Newsletter as interesting and informative as possible by contributing suggestions, news, and articles. The deadlines for receiving material for the next few issues are as follows.
